nAblement Apprenticeship Program

Pat Maher and Janet Licitra from SPR/AbilityLinks will be here on Tuesday, April 19th to interview students for their IT Apprenticeship program. If interested in scheduling an interview, please e-mail Susann Heft at sheft@uiuc.edu. The following is information about that program:

Dear New Graduate:

As an alumnus of the College of Commerce & Business Administration at the University of Illinois and a professional with a disability, I have a personal commitment to assisting current graduates to secure professional track opportunities in the critical and expanding field of information technology. SPR’s nAblement Apprenticeship program has been designed to promote and support these opportunities. In fact, SPR has been exploring creative ways to help address our clients’ IT needs for over 30 years in the industry.

SPR’s nAblement Apprenticeship program identifies entry level IT positions among our client base for which they would typically hire from the ranks of new college graduates. We work closely with our clients and prospective clients to educate them on the great potential and personal characteristics that college graduates with a disability can bring to their organization. We also emphasize our successful track record of identifying new graduates, with or without a degree in the field of IT, who show qualities consistent with the ability and likelihood to be successful in the field.

The Apprenticeship program includes a competitive starting salary with benefits, the identification and purchase of any accommodative technology that will better enable the apprentice to perform on the job, intensive, short-term technical training in the application or environment for which the apprentice is being hired, and ongoing mentoring throughout the apprenticeship- both in areas of life skills management and technical application support by SPR’s tenured IT professionals. At the end of a successful apprenticeship, our client agrees to offer a full-time opportunity to the apprentice and you’ll be on your way to a challenging and rewarding career in information technology.

If you’re a recent graduate or will be graduating soon and are interested in exploring an IT Apprenticeship through the nAblement program, go to www.sprinc.com, click on the nAblement link on the right side of the home page, then the Solutions tab and follow the instructions to submit your resume for prospective Apprenticeship positions. Your degree may be in a computer sciences discipline, but we are as interested in your drive and interest in the field of IT. If you have any questions regarding the Apprenticeship program, feel free to contact me at pmaher@sprinc.com or by phone at 312-756-1760x220. We welcome all inquiries.

Sincerely,

Patrick Maher

Murderball

10:30am, Huff Hall Gymnasium

Delta Sigma Omicron and the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services has been offered a special viewing of the film "Murderball" which will be shown during the Roger Ebert Filmfest on Thursday, April 21. "Murderball is probably the most talked about documentary this year. It is about the extreme sport of wheelchair rugby, played in reinforced and armored chairs by quadriplegics with various degrees of disability. It is a full contact sport.

But the heart of "Murderball", directed by Dana Adam Shapiro and Henry Alex Rubin and produced by Jeff Mandel, is the story of overcoming injuries and despair, and learning through rehabilitation and training not only to function in the everyday world, but to become Olympians. The movie is very frank about details of quadriplegia, including questions about sexuality." --Roger Ebert.

We will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with the 2 stars of the movie Mark Zupan and Joe Soares.
