Using JAWS with Shortcut Keys
Adjusting the voice settings in JAWS
To adjust the voices in JAWS, open the Voices menu. A small window
will open, in which you can make five selections:
- Volume - to adjust the volume:
- Click on and drag the slider to the left, for lower volume, or
to the right for higher volume, OR
- Press the Right Arrow key to make the volume higher or the
Left Arrow key to reduce the volume.
- To change the numbers by large increments, press PAGE UP
or PAGE DOWN.
- Rate - to adjust the rate of words spoken in a given time
interval:
- Click on and drag the slider to the right, for a higher rate,
or to the left for a lower rate, OR
- Press the Right Arrow key to make the rate higher or the
Left Arrow key to reduce the rate.
- To change the numbers by large increments, press PAGE UP
or PAGE DOWN.
- Pitch - to adjust the pitch of the spoken voice:
- Click on and drag the slider to the right, for a higher pitch,
or to the left for a lower pitch, OR
- Press the Right Arrow key to make the pitch higher or the
Left Arrow key to reduce the pitch.
- To change the numbers by large increments, press PAGE UP
or PAGE DOWN.
- Voice - use this option to choose a speaking voice for the
synthesizer.
- The voices to choose from are numbered from 0-8.
- To choose a voice, either click on the desired voice to
highlight it, OR use the arrow keys to change and choose the voice
- Punctuation - this option allows you to choose how much of
the punctuation you wish to have spoken. Your choices are:
