Universal Design Icon Using Close View in Macintosh

What is Close View?

Close View is a program that allows the screen to be magnified up to sixteen times. It also allows you to change the screen from standard black-on-white to white-on-black. Some of the Close View settings have keyboard shortcuts. However, if you want to change the display to white on black, you will need to use the mouse.

Note that while using Close View for screen magnification, the motion of the mouse pointer corresponds to the motion of your eyes. This means that when you move the mouse pointer to the right, the objects on your display move to the left. If you use Close View to magnify the screen more than 2x, you will probably need to adjust the mouse sensitivity as well.

If you don't need a lot of magnification, you can also try adjusting your monitor resolution.

Close View settings

The following options are available with Close View. Any of them can be enabled or disabled without affecting the basic use of Close View.

Screen Magnification

Close View allows you to magnify the screen anywhere from 2 to 16 times its normal size. This means that your display will only show a certain percentage of the screen at one time. Moving your mouse will change which part of the screen is showing on your display.

Note that the motion of the mouse pointer corresponds to the motion of your eyes. This means that when you move the mouse pointer to the right, the objects on your display move to the left.

Color Scheme

Close View allows you to view the screen either as black on white (standard) or as white on black. This setting has no keyboard shortcut. You will need to use the mouse to switch from one color scheme to the other.

Keyboard Shortcuts

You can use keyboard shortcuts to turn Close View on and off, and to set the magnification. You may also disable these shortcuts. You will need to use the mouse to turn the keyboard shortcuts on and off.

Setting up Close View

Note that on the Macintosh keyboard, the Command key is the one with the picture of the apple on it.

  1. Bring up the Close View window. (You may skip this step if the keyboard shortcuts are turned on and you do not want to change the color scheme.) You can do this with the mouse, which is the easiest option, but it is also possible to do this using only the keyboard. When you are done with this step, you should see a window like this:
    Close View dialog box
  2. The top portion of the Close View window controls the Close View status. If Close View is turned off, click the "on" button or press Option + Command + k. At the end of this step, a black-framed rectangle will appear on the screen.
  3. The screen magnification options are on the right middle portion of the Close View window. If you want to magnify the screen, click the "on" button or press Option + Command + x. You can change the magnification with the arrows in the spin box. You can also change the magnification using keyboard shortcuts. Press Option + Command + plus (+) to increase the screen magnification, or Option + Command + minus (-) to decrease the screen magnification.
  4. The left middle portion of the Close View box contains options that can only be set using the mouse. If you are using keyboard shortcuts only, you are now finished setting Close View. You can turn it off and on at any time using Option + Command + k. If you opened the Close View box using the keyboard and do not want to use the mouse, skip to step 7 now.
  5. The color scheme is on the top of the left middle portion of the Close View box. Use the mouse to select black on white or white on black.
  6. The keyboard shortcuts are on the bottom of the left middle portion of the Close View box. Use the mouse to turn the keyboard shortcuts on or off.
  7. Hit Command + w to close the Close View window. If you opened this window using the keyboard, the focus will switch to the Control Panel. You can continue using Command + w to close windows until all of the desired windows are closed.
