Universal Design Symbol UNIX Pine: Creating and sending Messages (and Replies)


Eight steps to compose a new message and send it

  1. Press M to return to the MAIN MENU
  2. At the MAIN MENU press C to bring up the COMPOSE MESSAGE screen.
  3. At the prompt "To     :" enter the e-mail address of the person you want to send a message to.  If you want to send the message to more than one person separate the e-mail addresses with commas.
  4. Press the TAB key or the DOWN arrow key to go to the "Cc      :" prompt.  At the "Cc     :" prompt you can enter the e-mail addresses of people you want to sent the e-mail to, but who are not the direct recipient ot the message.
  5. Press the TAB key twice or the DOWN arrow key twice to move to the "Subject  :" prompt.  Enter a short one line description of your message.
  6. Press the TAB key to move the cursor to the Message Text area.  This is where you want to type and edit your message.  Compose your message.
  7. When you have finished typing your message Press CTRL+X to send it.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to send the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.
  8. If you decide not to send your message Press CTRL+C.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to cancel the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.

Moving around inside an e-mail message that you are composing

To move one character to the left Press the LEFT arrow
To move one character to the right Press the RIGHT arrow
To move one line up Press the UP arrow
To move one lie down Press the DOWN arrow
To move the cursor to the end of a line Press CTRL+E
To move the cursor to the beginning of the line Press CTRL+A
To select text Press CTRL+SHIFT+6 and use the arrow keys
To cut selected text to the clipboard Press CTRL+K
To paste test that is in the clipboard Press CTRL+U
 

Six steps to reply to the author of the e-mail message that was sent to you

  1. Press R to reply to author of the message you are looking at.  You will be asked if you want to include the original message in the reply.
  2. Press Y if you want to include the message you are replying to or N if you don't want to include it.
  3. If there are other recipients of the message you will be asked if you would like to reply to all recipients.  Again, Press Y if you want to reply to all the recipients and Press N if you don't want to reply to all the recipients.
  4. The cursor will now be in the Message Text section on the message and you can type your message
  5. Press CTRL+X to send the message once you have typed it.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to send the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.
  6. If you do not want to send the message Press CTRL+C.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to cancel the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.  The message will be deleted and can not be retrieved.

Forwarding a message that was sent to you to a different person

  1. Press F to forward the message you are currently looking at to another person
  2. Enter the e-mail address of person you want to forward the message to at the "To     :" prompt
  3. If you would like to add a message or change the text of the forwarded message press TAB four times to move down to the Message Text area
  4. Press CTRL+X to send the message.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to send the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.
  5. Press CTRL+C if you do not want to send the message.  You will be asked to confirm that you want to cancel the message, Press Y to confirm or Press N to return to the message.

Looking at e-mail that you have sent

  1. At the MAIN MENU Press L to look at the FOLDER LIST.  The words "SELECT HERE TO EXPAND FOLDER LIST" will be highlighted.
  2. Press the ENTER key and a list of folders will appear.  The list of folders will include "INBOX", "saved-messages", and "sent mail"
  3. Use the left and right arrow keys to highlight "sent mail" and press the ENTER key.  A list of e-mail messages that you have sent will appear on the screen.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to highlight the message that you want to look at and press the ENTER key.
  5. Press I to return to the list of sent e-mail messages.
  6. Press M to return to the MAIN MENU
