Using Shortcut Keys in Pull Down Menus of Applications
3 Ways to Access Pull Down Menus
- Type the Function key 10 (F10) to highlight the File menu bar.
- Type the ALT key (usually next to the space bar) to highlight the
File menu bar. However, if the ALT key should not highlight the File
menu proceed to press the Function key 10 (F10) to highlight the File
menu.
- Some or all of the menu items in an applications menu bar will have an
underlined character. This underlined character indicates that this menu can be
pulled down using the ALT key in combination with a letter key.
Hold down the ALT key then type the underlined character to
directly pull down the commands associated with the pull down menu item.

- Use the left and right arrow keys to move the highlight one menu
bar item to the left or right.
- Type the ENTER key to view the commands associated with the pull
down menu bar.

2 Steps:
- Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight one
command at a time. Type the ENTER key to select a menu command.
- Some menu command names may have an underlined character.
Typing the underlined character will move you directly to the
command option.
3 Ways to Leave the Menu Bar
3 Steps:
- Type the ALT key to completely exit from the menu bar at any
time.
- Type the ESCape key to move back one menu level at a time.
For example if a menu bar item has been pulled down and you type the
ESCape key, the menu options will disappear and the highlight will
return to the menu item associated with the commands. Pressing the
ESCape key a second time will exit you from the menu bar.
- The Function key 10 (F10) is equivalent to the ALT
key and will completely exit you from the menu items.
