Understanding the ZoomText Xtra! levels

ZoomText Xtra! is designed to assist the visually impaired. To do so, it integrates three adaptive technologies (magnification, screen reading, and scanning with OCR) into a single program so that the user can have complete access to Windows applications and printed documents. Each of these technologies is contained on a level, and that level builds on the previous level.

Currently, the first two of the three technologies are presented in two levels, with a third level containing the third technology to be added later. The first level contains magnification abilities, and the second level contains screen reading. The third level will add scanning ability to the other two levels.

The levels currently available are:

  1. Level 1=magnification. While working in Windows 95, Level 1 will provide a magnified view of your screen as you run other Windows programs.
  2. Level 2=magnification + screen reading. As you run your Windows programs, the screen reader will speak automatically, telling you what is happening in the program - such as reading the contents of menu items as they become highlighted. There are three major functions to the screen reader:
  3. When added, the third level will consist of magnification + screen reading + scanning with OCR

All three levels contain DocReader. This is a reader which uses the full screen to read text from any Windows application or from scanned documents.

Three steps to access the level you want to use:

  1. Press ALT+X; the Xtra menu will open.
  2. Press the up or down arrows to choose the desired level.
  3. Press ENTER to select that level. The toolbar for that level will appear on the right side of the user interface.
