ILLINOIS Wheelchair Basketball/4H Collaboration
WHO
Students in elementary and
secondary school in Illinois who are eligible and interested in wheelchair
basketball are welcome to contact someone listed on the contact list
for further information. Students who are new to the sport or
unsure if they are eligible to play are welcome. All students
who participate in wheelchair basketball must be able to push a manual
wheelchair.
ELIGIBLE
Students who are eligible to
play wheelchair basketball are not just those who use a wheelchair on
a daily basis. Others who might be eligible include students with
orthopedic impairments, permanent knee injuries, and leg length discrepancies.
Further, those students with lower extremity weakness, spinal cord injuries,
spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury,
or amputation are also eligible Students who are unable to participate
in able-bodied basketball may be eligible to play wheelchair basketball.
Parents, coaches, officials, administrators, and other interested individuals
are also more than welcome to get involved in wheelchair basketball.
WHAT IS AVAILABLE FOR ATHLETES
Clinics are provided each year sponsored by the Illinois High School Association. These clinics are facilitated by Coach Mike Frogley, Head Coach of the University of Illinois Men’s and Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team, and/or athletes and assistant coaches from the University of Illinois wheelchair basketball teams. These clinics will be listed on the IHSA website in late September. Area teams conduct full schedules during the winter months. A list of teams and contact person are included. University of Illinois conducts camps during July for athletes and also conducts a team camp.
